Quinceanera is a magical moment in a young girl’s life. Maybe your sister, your cousin or even an aunt are celebrating the quince anos. Of course, you want to share all events. But do you know all about Quinceanera itself?

What is a Quinceanera?

Quinceanera celebrates a girl’s fifteenth birthday. Many quince girls go to church and attend a special mass, called Misa de Acción de Gracias. The priest blesses them and says a prayer that they remain faithful to their friends and family. The quince family and a special group of godparents, called padrinos, attend mass with her.

After Mass, it’s party time! The quince festival is a big event that lasts almost all night. Many of your friends and family will be there to help the quince girl celebrate.

Why do we have Quinceaneras?

Traditionally! The history of Quinceanera dates back hundreds of years to the Aztec Empire of South America. In those days, girls became adults when they turned fifteen. Some even got married so young!

Today, the Quinceanera is meant to welcome a girl into becoming a young woman. It is a time for families to celebrate together and be proud of their quince girl and her beauty.

What are the tiara and the scepter?

Tradition says that all girls are princesses on their quince anos. The tiara shows how the quince girl officially becomes a young woman. She is sometimes given to her by her grandmother. Other times, her godmother will put the tiara on her head during mass.

The scepter is like a staff, but with jewels and other special decorations. Scepters are held when a queen or princess is in command of her kingdom. Since the quince girls “rule” over their party, they can use a scepter for the night.

What is Ultima Muneca?

The ulitima muneca, or Last Doll, is a symbol of the quince girl who leaves her childhood behind. If that sounds bad, most 15-year-old girls are ready to put their toys away.

According to a tradition, the quince girl exchanges the last muneca for a bouquet of flowers. After Mass, she leaves the flowers at the altar as a prayer. In other traditions, the quince girl receives the doll at her party. She can choose to throw it in the air and the child who catches the doll can hold it.

What’s at the party?

All kinds of fun! The parents and godparents of the quince will prepare a large dinner for everyone. After everyone has eaten, there is a dance floor where everyone can let off steam and have fun. Some quince girls even make special gifts to all of their guests, called favors, as a thank you for coming.
